Get to Know The Girls
April Lyn

Born in Northern California, raised in South Dakota, moved to the Bayou City in 2000 after a brief stint in Seattle.  She’s been writing songs since she was twelve years old.  Writing runs in her family. Her grandmother had a few short stories published in Sacramento.  Growing up, April cut her teeth in that same spirit with a love for writing essays and poetry in school.  When she moved to Houston she began to take her song writing more seriously.  One night, fueled by liquid courage, she approached a pair of guitar players after their set at a local bistro.  Taking her only half seriously, they helped her set some of her lyrics to music.  A collaboration was born.   With no particular influence or genre to point to, and a deep love for people in general, she writes about the connections she makes and the relationships she’s had with people.  Most of her lyrics are about memories; actual, perceived, and the ones she hopes to someday have.   Her first recording, “Oh te cha”, she’ll tell the audience, is a song about sex.  She forged the phrase out of thin air, and recorded it at Sugar Hill Studios.  When audio engineer Andy Bradley left for Wire Road Studios, she promptly followed to hammer out the rest of her songs.  “Secrets”, a rudimentary song she wrote on her guitar is next at Wire Road.  Her closet is littered with scraps of paper, note books, and the backs of envelopes filled with lyrics, would be choruses, and song fragments yet to come.

Monika Leigh

Monika was born in Denver, CO and raised in Houston, TX. She fell in love with music at a very early age where she was given a baby Gibson electric guitar on her 12th birthday.  Soon after, she taught herself guitar chords and started writing her own music.  From there, she began to play music on the piano, drums, hand drums, bass, and Ukulele, and that's when she learned she had a voice meant for singing.

Over the years, she has been blessed to share her music with some other amazing artists: Robin Trower, Leo Aston, Nappy Roots, Scru Face Jean, Blake Shelton, and Erase the Virus.  For more information please go to:

Ellen Rogers

Ellen Rogers is a New Orleans styled Jazz, Soul and Funk powerhouse with great stories to tell and the talent to put them to melodies and rhythm structures that will capture your imagination.

In the early 90’s she began songwriting and performing in Haleiwa, HI.  Her own natural vocal style seemed to hit between Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and her lyrics come off strong and sassy.

During a visit back home in New Orleans, she was spotted byEddie Bo in 1996 and stayed.  Soon she began performing at the World Famous Tipitina’s and Maple Leaf.   She wrote lyrics and recorded for the TV show, The Big Easy at Ultrasonic Studios.  Her New Orleans “performance coaches” include Deacon John, Kermit Ruffins and Red Tyler.

Rogers became known in the Houston Jazz scene after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  In 2015, she sat in with Kenny Cordray at his annual musician’s holiday hang at Dan Electro’s, and the two became writing partners shortly after, working on his project: Jeff Beck tribute band, Tex Back.  Under Cordray’s guidance she has added lyrics to grooves and recorded at Sugar Hill and Wire Road with Andy Bradley.

Ellen Rogers is the voice of The Blue Monk’s, Jazz Sunday and until May 2017, Tex Beck. She is thrilled to be a part of the first annual Bayou Fem Fest!

Ms. Ingram also enjoys singing jazz on a regular basis, and has branched out from her classical roots to explore pop, funk, jazz, blues and even the occasional country song.
